This session will explore the components and best practices for developing and implementing an executive compensation process that will withstand intense scrutiny.
Bundling and Accountable Care Organizations
Donald Ashkenase
Special Advisor to the President, Montefiore Medical Center
Newly enacted health care legislation allows hospitals, beginning in 2012, to cooperate with physicians to provide leadership in voluntary Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). ACOs are designed to deliver optimal quality care and improved patient outcomes. Even for those institutions that do not yet envision becoming an ACO, the movement toward bundled payments is an undeniable transition for which all organizations must prepare. Mr. Ashkenase will discuss how his organization is positioning itself as a leader in establishing a model ACO program, and will offer valuable takeaways for other institutions.

The National Quality Forum has identified 28 "never events"—errors in medical care that are clearly identifiable, preventable, and serious in their consequences for patients, and that indicate a real problem in the safety and credibility of a health care organization. Just as preventing clinical "never events" from occurring is a vital quality and patient safety imperative, preventing potential governance failures is also critically important. This program explores leadership failures and ways boards can avoid them. Trustees will learn practical ways boards can ensure that these events never occur in their governance practices and procedures.
