Board Oversight of Financial Arrangements with Physicians-Keeping You (and Your Hospital) Out of Trouble with the Law
Robert H. Iseman
Partner, Iseman, Cunningham, Riester & Hyde, LLP
This session will provide practical and directive advice for trustees on how to provide legally sufficient board oversight of a hospital's financial arrangements with physicians. Mr. Iseman will discuss how best to manage the risks to boards, individual trustees, and hospitals; the proper roles of governance and management in the area of corporate compliance; and how to implement an effective compliance and audit program under the oversight of the board to monitor financial arrangements with physicians.
Transforming Physician Culture: A Journey From Golf to Basketball
(Adapt or Die)
Joseph S. Bujak, M.D., F.A.C.P.
Author, Speaker, and Consultant
The forces that are transforming health care require organization-physician alignment. However, there are cultural and ethical differences that separate these two interdependent constituencies. Each speaks a "different language," holds different perceptions of reality, and frames the critical issues differently. Dr. Bujak will examine these differences and propose ways to create a partnership in service of shared purpose.
Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record (EHR) "Meaningful Use" Incentive Programs
Susan Van Meter
Vice President, Federal Relations, Healthcare Association of New York State
Ms. Van Meter will provide a plain-English overview of the complex Medicare and Medicaid EHR "Meaningful Use" Incentive Programs. Established by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, these programs will provide eligible hospitals and physicians with temporary incentive payments for the adoption and successful implementation of EHRs that meet a variety of different meaningful use objectives, such as Computerized Provider Order Entry. Eligible hospitals and physicians who fail to become meaningful users by 2015 will be subject to Medicare payment reductions.
9:15 - 10:45 a.m.
Medical Homes: Two Approaches to Consider
Featuring the Ellis and Adirondack Medical Homes
Facilitated by Greg Burke
United Hospital Fund Consultant
The medical home, also referred to as a patient-centered medical home, is a comprehensive approach to providing primary care services to facilitate communication and shared decision-making between the patient, providers, and the patient's family. The medical home model presents opportunities for providers to better manage and coordinate patient care. Many boards are now evaluating whether a medical home model is right for their organization. This panel will highlight two successful, but very different medical home initiatives, present operational considerations, and discuss what boards should consider when assessing whether to develop a medical home. There will be ample time for questions.
12:30 - 2 p.m.
(Lunch will be served; registration required)
This luncheon is business-only; spouses/guests should make alternate plans.
Separate registration is required for this program. A ticket is necessary for attendance.
Integrating Strategic and Financial Planning
Cathy Sullivan Clark
Senior Fellow, Innovation, Noblis
Strategic and financial planning are opposite sides of the same coin. In fact, the best reflection of an organization's strategic priorities is often its financial plan, not its written strategic plan. This session will explore what it means to integrate strategic and financial planning, including the sources and uses of funds, how to develop a long-term strategic financial plan/estimating long-term financial capability, and special considerations related to health care reform.
